    Addis Ababa, 20 May 2019 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) on Monday 20 May, 2019, hosted Mary Robinson, former president of Ireland and UN Special Envoy on El Niño and Climate, in a session dubbed “A Conversation on Climate Justice.”Chaired by ECA’s Executive Secretary, Vera Songwe, the discussion revolved around Ms. Robinson’s recent book - Climate Justice: Hope, Resilience, and the Fight for a Sustainable Future.

  • UN-led road safety initiative kicks off in Ethiopia

    Addis Ababa, 16 May 2019 (ECA) - Road accidents claimed over 5000 lives in Ethiopia during the 2017/2018 fiscal year. Related property damage is estimated at $31 million for the same period. This is according to the Ethiopian National Road Safety Council.It is against this backdrop that a United Nations initiative to enhance road safety kicked off in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 16 May 2019 with a focus on reviewing the country’s road safety performance.

    Nairobi, Kenya, 17 May 2019 - Experts from all regions of Africa have met from 6-11, May 2019 and developed guidelines to prevent and address land, ethnicity and conflict in Africa. The Guidelines are expected to support the implementation of inclusive land policies and land governance practices as key factors in conflict prevention, peace building and sustainable development.The Writeshop to prepare the guidelines was organized by the AUC-ECA-AfDB African Land Policy Center (ALPC), with the financial support of the Swiss Development Corporation (SDC).
